Members' Website - Troubleshooting

SST SwingTrader is remarkably reliable, robust and bug free. However:

  • no matter how thorough the testing prior to launch of a new version, some problems (bugs) can seem to hide away until it is used by larger quantities of people and used in different ways
  • each user has a unique local environment including operating system, pc specification and other software which SwingTrader has to work alongside such as anti virus software.

This means that you may experience a problem that others do not see or that cannot be found in testing. Below is a description of the few common issues encountered together with the solutions.

One of the first things to do if you have a problem is to re-boot your machine AND (VERY IMPORTANT) re-boot your router/ modem/ firewall. It is amazing how often this solves the problem.

If that and the tips below do not help your particular situation and the problem persists please email me by clicking here with as much detail as possible and include screen shots if you can. We can only solve a problem if we can reproduce it. Sometimes to help us trace a problem I may ask you to send me a copy of:

the Event Log
and/ or your Watchlist.xml file

Below (further down the page) are the instructions for how to do this.

------------------------------------------------------------

Cannot download data from Yahoo/Google (warning messages when you try to "Check symbols for trades" or back test or optimise).
or cannot validate username
or cannot open SwingTrader
or cannot access the SwingTrader website including the Members' area

There can be two causes for this - for more help on this one click here.

Vista and Windows 7 Users
I have run SwingTrader on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 and it runs on these operating systems extremely well". However, if you are running Vista or Windows 7 and experience any problems - particularly if you can't log on or SwingTrader crashes - you do need to be sure that you have administrative rights.

Using Windows Explorer go to C:, Program Files, SST, then click on SST SwingTrader folder to open it. Look for SST.WinApp.exe RIGHT click on that and select Properties then Compatibility then check the box 'Run this program as administrator' (so that a tick appears in the box). Click Apply then OK. Try opening SST SwingTrader again after this and it should open. If you are asked for your username please make sure you enter it correctly (it is case sensitive). If you are within the 14 day free trial SwingTrader will open without your username being used.

The security in pc's now is so sensitive that it may be blocking the communication that is necessary between your SwingTrader application and my web site as well as the Google and Yahoo websites. If you still experience problems you may need to consult your pc supplier or pc expert to set up the relevant permissions.

If you experience problems please let me know as much detail as possible including what Operating System you are using and send a copy of your Event Viewer. For instructions to get to Event Viewer please click here.

Odd Back Test Results
If you are experiencing some odd back test or optimisation result numbers that are very long and don't make sense it may be due to your Regional Settings. Try changing your Regional Settings from the country you are operating in (E.G. Dutch) to UK settings and see if the results are then correct.

Trades apparently disappearing from "Prospective Trades" or "Open Trades".
A typical example is that you see a prospective trade in SwingTrader and it triggers (hits the open price). You then check and it has disappeared from "Prospective Trades" as you would expect but for some reason it doesn't appear in "Open Trades". If you have spotted something like this please click here for an explanation.

Removing SST SwingTrader & Reinstalling
We may also ask you to remove SST SwingTrader and re-install it or install a different version. First, if you can, take a back up copy of your WatchList.xml file (see below). Normally your watch lists and past optimisations are retained but better to be safe than sorry. To remove SwingTrader please go to "Start", Control Panel, Add/ Remove Programs. Click on SST SwingTrader then click the "Remove" button. Also make sure the old installer (SST.SecureSetup) is deleted from your desktop before downloading a new one. Then go to the download page and download a fresh installer. Run the installer following the instructions on the download page. Your existing username will work with the new application.

To send me your Event Log (Event Viewer)

  1. Click "Start" (bottom left of Windows) then click "Run"
  2. Type in the word eventvwr and press enter or click OK
  3. RIGHT click on the word "Application" on the right or left hand side of the page and then click "Save Log File as.."
  4. Choose a place (folder) where you can easily find it again and name it Event Log and add your initials and the date in the following way - Event Log DGS 120309.evt
  5. Send me this file as an attachment to an email together with a detailed description of the problem.

WatchList.xml (copy for back up or to send me)

I may ask you to send me a copy of your WatchList.xml file but also you may want to take a back up copy from time to time just in case. You may have carried out many optimisations and created a number of watch lists. All these are stored in this file and a back up copy is always a good idea even though the file should automatically be retained if, for example, you download a later version of SwingTrader.

Use Windows explorer to access the SwingTrader program (Start, My Computer, then click the "Folders" icon, click Local Disk (C:) then Program Files, then the 'SST' folder, then SST SwingTrader, then Yahoo, then general.)

You will see a file on the right hand side called WatchList.xml

Right click this file then click copy.

Right click on a place where you can find the file again - I suggest your Desktop - and click Paste.

Send me the WatchList.xml file as an attachment to an email together with a detailed description of the problem

Printing Bug
We have just discovered an intermittent bug when printing Prospective, Open & Closed Trades if they run to more than one page. Occasionally, when you click "Printable Version" the Report Viewer will not display page one and therefore it will not print. If you see this, click "Page Setup" in Report Viewer and then click OK, the page will refresh to show page one of the trades. They will then print.
